BAC Clone General Information

Large insert BAC (Bacterial Artificial Chromosome) libraries are the basis for constructing physical maps, genome sequencing, and comparing genomic regions of interest. These recombinants typically contain inserts of 100-200 Kb, minimizing the number of clones necessary to represent the whole genome, and so minimizing storage and the screening effort

Typically, libraries are supplied (1) as high-density hybridization filters so that researchers can probe for clones of interest, (2) as 384-well plates of glycerol stock clones so that researchers can stamp their own filters, perform end-sequencing, or construct physical maps, or (3) as individual clones in agar stabs so that researchers can study a clone previously identified as being of interest.
